![]() ![]() This film is one perfect example of numerous dramas, where the food is not necessarily the main focus, but where the meal shared together offers great opportunities for all characters concerned to display different views about great many things. Highly recommended film to all film and food lovers! Cooking in this film is presented extremely thoughtfully, and perfectly shows highly refined style of home cooking with well defined "Southern" flavor. One of the best American movies released in the past 20 years. We don't even get to hear his famous laughter, as the comedy in this movie is very toned down, as is the entire plot, which has obviously been given "a special treatment" in which all distractions and possible sources of conflicts, such as race issues, alcoholism, cancer and such are being ignored or bypassed, preventing these things coming up as any way or form as a points of discussion, which does create a bit overly sanitized view - for a story supposedly based on real life, this is a bit strange decision, but it also does help to tell the story more clearly and poignantly. Even Eddie Murphy manages to convince in his role, which is so distant as anything could be, from his "usual" repertoire. Superbly written story, one of the best screenplays I've ever seen adapted to any screen.
